Dual DL

If you are waiting for this to debut here then be informed that it's now available at Swee Lee: $329. I'm not a delay fan & after trying this one out briefly, I personally feel I can make do with the DD-3 / DD-7. I don't own any more BOSS delay pedals in the mean time & this did not entice me to want a delay pedal per se.

Resin-ated

Interesting finish by Schecter; resin injected streaks across the E-1's maple top. Other than that, it's just an E-1 model. Pickups are Seymour Duncan '78 / '59. To note - this is a 24.75" guitar.

AZ 2025 @ Swee Lee

The 'new' Ibanez AZ models are now available at Swee Lee (AZ2204 / AZ2402). New here refers to the new colours offered for this year as these two models were already available in Ibanez's catalog last year (2024). It's good to note that list prices for these models remain unchanged. We notice how manufacturers would take every opportunity to revise prices upwards with every 'new' offering but not in this case. Why would they do so if it's merely a different colour offered, yes?

Berzerker

I recall seeing Wylde Audio guitars at Davis GMC some time back. These are easy competition against  BC Rich's spiky, obtrusive & menacing designs. The Berzerker here is new & it has skulls body art to further intrigue the extreme music fundamentalists.

If you have outgrown the attention seeking skull theme, this corridor version might appeal to you. What's interesting about the Berzerker is that it sports a 24.6" scale length very Gibson-esque.

Ibanez: GS121 (3)

The first thing that was done to the GS121 was a body top treatment, specifically, it's a re-finish. The original top was satin black which had a few scratches in some areas that scratch removers could not handle. That's right folks, you simply can't use liquid  scratch removers (plenty available at petrol kiosks) on satin surfaces. Not quite apparent but the new finish is a flip-flop blue / green / purple. I only did two layers this time & allowed drying to take place overnight. I also placed it in direct sunlight to help the curing process & applied polish cream. If this step is omitted, chances are, the finished top would be sticky & would stick to your bag surface. My make-shift spray 'booth', as you can see above, are merely used boxes conveniently salvaged from the recycling bin downstairs.

The default fixed bridge (left) had dead saddles; they were mouldy & the action adjustment screws were rusty & impossible to turn. I ordered a replacement unit but the screw holes were all misaligned & were smaller (right). The default bridge was given a good clean up & the saddles from the replacement units were transferred over. Apparently, the replacement unit was meant for Standard Ibanez models, not the GIO ones.

I took the opportunity to re-finish the headstock as well, to match the body. The original decal was easily removed as it was a screened transfer. The surface was sanded & sprayed over, again, only two layers were done. The replacement decal you see here is the adhesive type. I prefer this over the water transfer version as it is more resistant to lacquer & devoid of that Fender-ish ghostly outline. After proper drying, the headstock was given a layer of lacquer finish to seal the decal onto the surface. As you've noticed, I removed the nut to facilitate this process. It was easily re-glued once everything was done. I hope the pics above give you an idea of what a flip flop finish is; notice the colour shift from purple (top) to green (bottom).

Beez did the final touches for me; a pair of Artec pickups together with a 3-way pickup selector. The default pots were left alone as they were still in excellent condition.

That's it folks, a make over coverage of an unglam guitar. We cannot rule out the fact that something great can happen to something uncelebrated if the right things are done to it. I'm showing you that you don't need a luthier level know-how (myself especially) to actually execute a simple tinkering. Be prepared to accept the fact that some spares might not conform to your needs because replacement units are often not produced by the original manufacturer & measurements could be off. Wishing you all a great weekend & a successful mod adventure if you're at it.

Price watch (90)

Swee Lee is listing this for $1,099...

Same seller. When the VM Baritone debuted around 2021, it was listed for USD600 +/- but along the way, this one somehow gained cult status & listed for about USD1K (SGD1,341) in the after aftermarket. I don't recall seeing this black version being brought into the stores here but still, paying that much for a Squier?

Price is too good to be true but understandably so as it suffered a broken headstock along the way. If you trust the standard of this repair, by all means, go ahead.

On a personal note, I prefer broken headstocks to be repaired with splines (above) as an approach to strengthening the broken areas. This is a more assured way but not the compulsory standard to observe, it depends on the type of breakage. Stay away from broken headstock instruments if you can.

Schecter: Red Dawn

New for 2025: Schecter Red Dawn guitars. This particular model you see above is the Sunset 6 ET. The Red Dawn models are basically shred-type players with Fishman pickups (Modern Ceramic / Alnico) which sport a rail design instead of pole pieces. If you don't fancy the Evertune bridge, a tune-o-matic type bridge is also offered. Other variations include baritone & 7-string models.

B Clearance @ Swee Lee

Swee Lee is having good discounts for B-Stock items. I find some of the guitars clearing for good prices but the extent of the B-grade was not disclosed so I'm a little wary when it comes to recommending others on what to grab before the offers cease. For instance, bridge misalignments, despite being slight, should be avoided due to intonation issues. Also, fretboard lifting off might lead to expensive repair episodes down the road.

A sub-$3K PRS Silver Sky should interest many fans of this guitar but as mentioned before, the nature of the flaw was not disclosed in the listing details so tread with caution. Two colours are available, moc sand & dodgem blue ($2,931 ea).

This Cort G300 is one heck of a player. Because it doesn't sport a glam brand on the headstock, players are naturally not drawn to one. I played this model a few times back when it was still available at Swee Lee's Bras Basah outlet & it's an easy recommendation for those looking for a good guitar without spending a bomb ($805).

This is an easy recommendation for newbies but pros won't mind getting one for backup - Heritage Ascent H-150. The only dislike (personal) are those tuners. For all models that I've tried in store, they were either dodgy or stiff ($289).

Ibanez 2025 (6)

Still trolling the Ibanez web page & looking at the 2025 offering, this time veering off into acoustic territory. The thing about Ibanez is, the manufacturer continues to offer good acoustics (nothing boutique) at reasonable prices. No new models in the mean time, just this AAM50 offered in saphire blue burst...

... & a coral red burst iteration. The AAM50 was already in the catalog pre-2025 but offered in a natural finish. Be informed that the AA model sports a slightly shorter scale (25") & this AAM50 comes with a solid spruce top. These are already available at Swee Lee for a good price: $399.

Ibanez GS121 (2)

About a couple of weeks ago, I managed to acquire a pre-owned GS121 from someone who stopped playing guitar altogether. True enough, the guitar wasn't purchased locally, it was ordered through Amazon back in the day. I am a firm S-Series fan & wouldn't let this go even if it's not a revered model. It's a mere GIO Series, no biggie. How much? I sold off my BOSS delay pedal for this & still had spare change to drop by the supermarket for some cans of sodas & a jar of freeze-dried coffee. No / not yet?

Walked past Cristofori a couple of days ago - no Kramers in sight. I sincerely hope it's a matter of not yet instead of none. A friend highlighted the fact that Cristofori makes money through its music courses & lessons. Selling instruments is a secondary business. This is why I believe in supporting music stores which are true to their cause instead of establishments like this. It also highlighted the fact that for a big name like Gibson, only certain distributors here can truly represent the brand in terms of intent. Imagine having the '84s & Night Swans in store for you to try & renew your Kramer inclinations. Not in the mean time, I guess.

Standard 2025 (2)

There's one more Fender model joining the Standard Series (Indonesia) this 2025 & it's the Acoustasonic. Currently there are only a couple of guitars on the list, this Telecaster you see above & the Jazzmaster. I believe we all know the Acoustasonic didn't really hit it with many players due to its quirky nature being in the intersection of an acoustic (which requires amplification to sound good) & a solid body model (compromised by the non-ergonomic body, the neck is awesome). To top it off, the price was a put off; excessive to say the least. This year, the Acoustasonic continues to populate the Fender catalog but becomes a rather affordable offering (USD1,099 USD599) in the hope of attracting whoever it needs to in light of it not being firmly rooted in any music genre.

Ibanez 2025 (5)

We have to give it to Ibanez for not neglecting their non-guitar products when it comes to innovation & revision. If you own the NS Series of Ibanez cables, you know those are really wanting in terms of durability / reliability. I'm gonna say it upfront; don't waste your money on those. This year, the manufacturer has the Glideline Series of cables to consider. These cables were actually beta tested with the JTC group of guitarists before the official release. I'm aware many of us are of the opinion that some guitar accessories are bordering on being snake oil; you just can't hear the difference. I'm one of those skeptics when it comes to cables until I really tried a good one, something that was backed by a fair amount of investment in terms of time & R&D. For the record, I have not tried the Glideline cables (are they even here yet?!). Looking forward.

Ibanez GS121

The Ibanez GS121 is a rare GIO Ibanez. It is perhaps the only GIO S model made with a fixed bridge. Ibanez didn't manufacture too many GIO S on that note & even fewer made it here. The GS121 was a 2013 production & it wasn't brought in to the stores here. Nothing fancy with the details, this is indeed an entry level Ibanez.

To be continued...

Edwards' B-Single

Still on everything single pickup - the new Edwards E-Horizon_ET/Baritone. As the name implies, it's a baritone (27") & it's simply attractive. I'm not into the Evertune bridge so that's a deal breaker for me. There's this thing about single pickup guitars that are so... attractive. This one has a blank fretboard; absolutely my thing.

Jackson 2025 (2): Singles

A trio of single pickup guitars from the Jackson camp this 2025. L-R: Dinky Pro Plus Pure Metal Limited Edition Kelly KE1A / DK1A / Pro Plus Pure Metal Limited Edition Soloist SL1A. Not an easy appeal when it comes to single pickup guitars but there will be fans (especially when the price is right). Wish there was a fixed bridge offering...

Ibanez 2025 @ Swee Lee

The new (2025) Ibanez models are starting to make their way to Swee Lee. The delicious RG460 are available for a sub-$700 price tag. I'm not a big fan of the bridge but I love those pickup configuration & the colours.

The much anticipated AZ Standards are also available for $799. Need to try these in person & decide if these are really a step above the AZES.

Re-string: Takamine D50C

Yes, I still do guitar re-string especially for residents of Choa Chu Kang. The Takamine D50C you see above belongs to Ms Maura who is not a CCK resident but lives in Bukit Panjang, very near to my former workplace. I don't mind making a trip down to a familiar neighbourhood especially for folks who come across my services through a Google look up. In addition to a re-string, a fretboard clean up & re-conditioning was done. Two of the tuners were loose & that's nothing a screw driver could not fix. If you need a re-string but do not wish to head to the stores to get it done, let me know if I could be of help.

Rockman returns

I'm kinda excited to try this out when it's made available here. No biggie actually, it's just a re-interpretation of the Rockman unit.

For those of us who didn't grow up in the '80s, Rockman is a headphone amp unit as depicted above. Some players really liked the tone of this device when plugged into an amp. So in the spirit of this rather minimalist approach to guitar processing, MXR re-introduced the X100 in a pedal format so plugging one into an amp is inevitable. From the various demos available out there, it seems that the X100 has one of the better tone interpretation when it come to the overdrive-chorus pairing.
