Knife edge pivot feature isn't an exclusive design. Fender's Deluxe model whammy bridges have them, even Ibanez's SAT Pros have them- both are non locking models.

not only is it a knife edge but he uses it as a dual action whammy. how does he keep it in tune without the locking nut?

is he the first chap to do that? watch Stevie Ray Vaughan in action & you'll understand why he's one heck of a player & then some :-o keep in mind that SRV's bridge is Fender's vintage/ traditional version whic doesn't feature any knife edges or any modern revision to enhance playing/ stability.

having locking attributes to keep in tune is quite a myth because we can keep in tune without those features (Leo Fender knew that), just that it doesn't last long.
