Hoodlum

This is Jan Cyrka. He's one of those rare guitar talents who don't prioritize shred in guitar instrumentals but still has lots of mojo going in his music. I bought his first two albums (Beyond the Common Ground/ Spirit) at the now defunct MPH Music Power House CD section at Stamford Road.

I remember JC because of his guitar which had some Hoodlum graphics on it. It started out with his Kramer (as seen in the preceding pic) & the Hamer here.

He recently gave his Ibanez AZ the Hoodlum treatment as well. My respect to him for keeping this enthusiasm alive. For some of us, a certain image triggers bitter memories of our past which we strive to suppress but for the rest of us, those images are the very definition of ourselves. I think I belong to the former camp.

Hamer guitars to close down

Hamer guitars will cease operations after 37 years of presence. Fender owns the Hamer brand name after its purchase from Kaman in 2007. The parent company cited declining sales as the cause.

My exposure to Hamer guitars was largely attributable to Trey Azagthoth (Morbid Angel) & Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick). Hamer guitars are available at City Music & I've played them to test the feel & tone which aren't too detached from the other guitar brands out there. The range available here are also limited & largely consist of the affordable models. This is the predicament of having a giant parent company overseeing the operations of small time players; they need the leverage but at the same time, are at the mercy of being axed at the first considerations should sales go wayward.

City Music Sale: Recommendations (Part 1)

Ah... the year-end City Music sale is here again, some stuff here for your considerations...

Echotone: If you're looking for an affordable semi, the Hamer Echotone should be on your list. It's a well-built guitar, nothing boutique grade though, but something very pleasant. Cleans are great from this guitar, especially some from the neck humbucker & the overdrive tones just sound very acceptable. For the discerning tone mongers, the Echotone sounds a little different as it sports a maple neck, not a mahogany piece like some others.

Sale: $466

Vector: OK, so the v-outline here might prove to be the attractive esthetic but that's besides the point. We should all prioritize tone & playability when it comes to an instrument selection which the Hamer Vector has aplenty- but the default humbuckers here are aimed at overdrive frenzies rather than squeaky clean moments. Be reminded though, of how practical all things of this contour would be when played sitting down. The alder (body) & maple (neck) combo also ensures inherent clarity.

Sale: $417
