Mummies

I refer to the V-Picks Mummy as my comfort pick. These are 2.75mm but light as heck. Those deep etchings are essential for me as they help me deal with careless moments; the pick would still be between my fingers if I loosened my grip. In addition to those, the Mummy sports a bevelled, rough edge which helps with aggressive music. Also, if you don't already know, it reduces the chirping sound when dealing with plain, unwound strings. The red version there was a custom order, otherwise, all Mummy picks are colourless.

Three amigos

My current go-to trio:

  1. V-Pick: Mummy Had been my favourite since I tried them. They are currently offered in a 2.75mm thickness which is below my standards. However, the efficiency I get from this one is impressive
  2. Gravity: Custom Shop Edge This is a recent resurgence; I had abandoned them for personal reasons but that's all buried away for goodness sake. Similar material to V-Pick but the custom options here mean you get to choose the thickness, colour as well as grip type. This one's a 3mm, might be going up to 4mm in time to come.
  3. DAW: Custom engraved Shredline Ordered a set last Black Friday, 3mm & partial acrylic. The smoothest, fastest but lacked a good grip. Still, it's the one I ended up using for the rest of my playing time after starting with the other two.
Note that I have pretty much settled with unpolished edges. This prevents the picks from giving off that chirping sound when you hit the plain strings; no chirping annoyance with wound strings.

Still Mummy-ing

I'm still busy with these picks. They are not entirely customized to my specs but they are sporting my preferred colours & thickness. The clear version is the manufacturer's default model (2.75mm). I like them for their tank grade hardness but light at the same time so no unnecessary effort is required to overcome the weight resistance.

What does a preferred pick do to your playing? It gives you more articulation. The simple reason being, it's what you want it to be so it's the 'perfect' tool for the job. It's how the tennis player feel after getting his dream racket & how the footballer feels after putting on his dream boots; the perfect implement at your disposal. There's now more focus on the crucial element- your playing.

Then comes a friend who says your pick is crap, it's unplayable. You should be smiling broadly because you now have proof that the picks are absolutely unusable unless it's handled by you. Perfect. However my friends, your preferences may change along the way, on various grounds. As such, your preferred pick may change. You will then retire your previous love in the knowledge that they've served you well.

Living with the Mummy

This was a recent delivery. I'm in the midst of trying V-Picks, as many as possible, in various sizes & manifestations. This one here is called the Mummy. The indentations there were not laser etched, they were tool grounded & you can feel the raw end product. The textured perimeter is what the manufacturer refers to as the ghost rim. The intention of which is to transfer some pick grip to the strings, the result- some friction induced bite into your picking. Shredders & grinders alike will appreciate this consideration.
