Tubescreamer application: Jeff Loomis
Jeff Loomis, has lethal equipment to propel his ultra heavy tone; an EMG equipped guitar (Schecter) + ENGL amp. Surely, this is more than sufficient to be crushing ear drums but do take time to watch the superb performance above, particularly, take note of the only pedal he's using- why would he need it anyway? This is why I always include a mild drive/ distortion pedal in my set up; it's not the greed of having more distortion, it's what the pedal does for playing ease- it helps rev up picking sensitivities (among other supplements) so I can pick faster without having to apply more pressure/ effort which would entail lethargy & mistakes.

i never expected a shredder to be using a tubescreamer of all things..i have an afterburner on my guitar but have yet to compare it to a tubescreamer..i'll have to borrow one from a friend
The tubescreamer not only provides a mild drive, it gives the tone a middle frequency boost as well. This tightens up the sound. If you play gallopy machine gun style metal riffs, this effect gives you better note definition, even if you do not use the drive on it(knob turned all the way down). I guess this is the reason why Jeff Loomis uses one even though he has a high gain amp.
does the afterburner add to drive? something to think about...
shredder or otherwise, a particular pedal should not be exclusive in its application :-)
the Tubescreamer's midrange hump, through a very intense distortion set up, is rather mild. it's real application here is to add sauce to an already splendid tone- YOUR tone, however you like it.
I just recently added a tube screamer to my board after much deliberation, love it.
the afterburner sounds more like a boost though EMG says it increases the gain, i took it out after i started using a Blackout AHB-2 as that pick up has more than enough output on it's own...i did try the Hardwire OD with my 3120 but i much prefer the tone of the amps drive
the Tubescreamer is a useful pedal (drive-wise), nevermind the dichotomised opinions it generates. the general belief is that if you own a high-gain amp, the Tubescreamer becomes unnecessary but that's not the point :-)
