Hey, dad! (Part 51- Kiko content)

Hey, dad! You missed the first Kiko clinic here, right? Hope you can make it for this one. Are you gonna get a guitar & an amp for this promo here? Ok, at least a guitar? No? How about a complimentary ticket to watch the show? What do you mean you are not sure? I don't think they can really see the details, hope you supplement them here.

Ibanez: Herman Li clinic (S'pore)

Last night was my 2nd Herman Li clinic attendance. The reason why I made it a point to do so was because the man doesn't hold back when it comes to sharing which was also the reason I enjoy guitar clinics more than live shows. There were interactions with the musicians & much education would take place due to the insights discussed. Of course, the crowd didn't comprise of instrumental dweebs entirely so there were some amusing questions being asked (which wasn't Ibanez related, of course) but the most memorable query concerned whammy mechanics which a member of the audience had difficulty with. According to the individual concerned, each whammy moment would entail in the guitar going out of tune. So master Li did a further probe by asking the fan which guitar was in use. A (Fender) Squier was it. Herman Li's most comprehensive reply to the problem was:

Oh, you can't do much with that one...

The crowd went wild. Cheered. Clapped. Roared. 

This wasn't a glorious moment in the mockery of another brand name but a reality check: You want to do whammy gymnastics, you gotta get equipment which is right for the job. Certainly, the Squier isn't equipped with the right whammy bridge to manifest a Herman Li-type whammy abuse, yes?

My daughter was playing with some stuff I still keep for the memories, I can still remember specific occurences during some of the shows/ events:

Top row: (L-R)

• Marty Friedman clinic- Friedman appeared in platform shoes, played some Megadeth instrumental medley, explained why he moved to Ibanez
• Gary Hoey Clinic- Hoey promoting Fender's Cyber Twin amp
• Joe Satriani clinic (event was cancelled)

Middle row: (L-R)

• Frank Gambale clinic- Beez actually called me to inform me of this memorable clinic. Gambale just had his new Yamaha signature guitar out so he was explaining the unique features like the Fret Wave & rear pickup installation, among others. During the autograph session, I wished Gambale a safe journey to his next destination; the man called me back as I was walking away & shook my hand one more time- allegedly, I was the first fan to have done so...
• Billy Sheehan clinic- It's a Yamaha clinic but I made Mr. Sheehan sign a poster featuring his long-time Fender P-bass (his 'wife' as he affectionately called it).
• Foo Fighter/ Sonic Youth concert- people were shouting for Sonic Youth to come on during the FF slot...

• Harry Connick Jr concert- Harry Connick is one of the best musician in my books
• Metallica concert- not too pleased with the show because I was at the rear, every time the music came on, it's one loud buzz with no darn definition whatsoever
• MAD (Musicians Against Drugs) show @ Ayer Rajah CC- I'm a friend of Stomping Ground's guitarist, Zahid. He gave me one ticket to watch him play but I bought another for a friend.
