Selling: EHX / Egnater pedals

I'm trying my best to tide through the coming July so these pedals are for sale. The EHX Operation Overlord OD is best for someone looking for that little harder OD voicing without going into distortion territory ($150).

One of the so called boutique pedals that I still own. This one was nearly $300 new, the Egnater Goldsmith ($199). Both pedals are lightly used as I have moved to amps in terms of drive / distortion reference.

Walking flanger

Never knew Andy Summers had a thing for flanger. The fact that it took this long for it to be noticed & a signature flanger being done shows a lack of contemporary chemistry in the mean time. Let's face it, it's increasingly difficult to have something exciting put out into the market these days. Falling back on yesterday's heroes might be it.

Melt

This is the latest angry stomp box by EHX. It's in fact EHX's fresh take on intense distortion after the Metal Muff. It has a 3-band EQ section, supplementary boost plus an on board gate so it gets my vote for being a self-sufficient unit. The fact that it has 2 channels - NORMAL / BURN - means this is serious business when it comes to intensity. Add the boost & it's gonna be HELL-ish. However, videos & sound clips show that the HM is treading too close to BOSS' HM-2 in terms of voicing. So I'll be checking this out once it gets here because it looks too promising to just be a clone of a famous competitor.

Dinosaur fuzz

If there's any fuzz fanatic who deserves a signature pedal, J Mascis has to be the one. This signature Big Muff is a belated tribute, really.

My Dinosaur Jr. staple are these three releases, Where You Been being my personal fav. These collection of songs opened up some perspectives as to what being guitar-inclined means. It's the other side of shred-till-you-drop guitar dedication; magnificently introverted.

MM: Gate

This update strictly relates to the noise gate function of the MM. I plugged this in without other pedals, just a stand alone application. Guitar in use was an RG550 with a D'Activator X pickup on board. 

The threshold here was designed to accommodate other pedals in the lineup. In this application, the gate becomes ultra sensitive past 9 o'clock. In fact, any faint strumming would fail to get signals through. Past noon, the gate becomes super sensitive so this would benefit those who are using noisy, active pickups. Beyond this, you actually need a boost pedal or any drive-type unit (eg. Tube Screamer / OD-3) to push things through. If you are relying on an external noise gate unit in the mean time, it's unnecessary once you are set on switching to this MM as a primary distortion source. 

I will give this pedal a full appraisal as I pipped it against the HM-2w today & noted some interesting observations. 

EQMM

 

Had been wanting to get this for a while; the celebrated EHX Metal Muff in its mini format but featuring a full EQ section & a noise gate. There's nothing wrong with the previous incarnation with just a pair of knobs & a 3-mode EQ (flick switch). Just that some of us want a little more option when it comes to voicings. I've not tested this comprehensively, will update in due time. 

Tube loss

 

This had been circulating in guitardom over the last couple of days or so. The EHX camp is announcing a supply shortage which had effectively pivoted this understanding into a panic declaration of sorts. There are even some airheads out there proclaiming the potential rise in their amp value due to this situation. Guitardom is also made aware that the Chinese counterparts are not exactly forthcoming in their supply status as well. Overall vibe - everyone should fear for their tube amp existence now that this is happening. Until a definite, trustworthy avenue cites a reliable demand-supply crisis, we should shut up & play guitar.

Intelligent follower

Another new one at the pedal front - EHX Intelligent Harmony Machine. I would sum it up as a harmonizer with polyphonic content & then some. With one of such pedals in your line up, chances are, you are trying to conjure creativity more than anything else. There are days when we would pivot on creative outputs rather than being at our technical or melodic best because we run into a mental block trying to chase what others are already professing at. So at such times, we move away from that aspect of playing & escape into another realm, really. Watch what this pedal can do despite being small:

Goodbye, July...

Mig

The MIG-50 is back. It's now the EHX interpretation of tone greatness.

Amp buffs here will know that the MIG-50 started out as a Sovtek. It's one of those amps in tone folklore that had much to offer but perished in the shadows of obscurity. 

Greatness here is defined by how the amp reacted superbly with a straight-through set up as well as a pedal laden line up. If you are looking for high gain fidelity, this won't serve your needs, it requires an external push in terms of pedals which is an easy discourse. In today's amp-speak, the MIG is a flat response amp that excels with lots of supplementary inputs, it's simply that kinda of amp very much in the likeness of a Roland JC & the absolutely under-rated Laney Lionheart. I'm happy to see this amp being available after countless teasing by the EHX camp in their pedals demo. However, those who thrive live might find it more useful than indoor dwellers due to the obscene amount of volume on offer. Let's hope the MIG gains enough popularity to be offered in smaller wattage format. Here's the MIG-50 in action:

Switching

An unlikely purchase but if you stay at home & spend time with your guitars excessively, it might end up this way. I've been toggling between two amps lately, was thinking it would be great to hear both in action simultaneously. I own the Switch Blade but this Plus version lets the player activate both amps instead of mere toggling. I'm still in no position to engage in a substantial purchase so a small gift to myself makes me feel happy; there is still life in the midst of settling one's medical bills.

Ripped

Latest in the line up of all things fuzz - EHX Ripped Speaker. One more time, I'm not a fuzz fan but I appreciate how fuzz pedals are used in context. In this case, I like how it cleans up with the guitar volume rolled down & that smooth tone for slide play. Watch this:

MM 2021

The EHX Nano Metal Muff gets a feature revision this year (actually, late 2020). The latest incarnation (left) features a 3-band EQ (yes!) & a noise gate. The previous version (right) was a bare 2-knob affair with a scoop midrange option. Thank you, EHX, for keeping it practical; a more editable EQ section is the way to go as metal heads out there are not about scooping the midrange exclusively. The noise gate also helps tame things down in high gain settings. On my list, definitely.

Game on

 

We're still in pedal-dom & here's something refreshing albeit a one-trick pony; EHX's Mainframe bit crusher. I seriously have no idea if the current market is full of players in dire need of gaming-esque blips & beeps. The good thing is, it works for guitar, bass & synth. It's rather obvious which aforementioned  instrument sounds best with this one. On ordinary days it serves as a good fuzz pedal, be informed.

Control

This is the latest EHX release called the Cntl Knob. It's basically an expression pedal without any rocking parts. You set the two knobs there to toggle between your desired differences & that's it. Why the need for this one? If you are put off by expression pedals taking up real estate on your board, this would be a possible alternative. The catch - it only works with pedals with an expression input. However, for the love of me, I could hardly imagine the need for one after watching the demo clip. I shouldn't talk too much as I'm not the pedal board type. Anyway, if you can spare the time:

Pedal power

This is one of those things people warned you not to purchase - a novelty pedal. I disagree. It's meeting my objective of having a simple, no-frills, power section to hook your pedals to. The entire set-up & more insights would come soon. Suffice to say that it won't level up against any small, low wattage tube amp. The guitar-solid state chemistry is a total departure from what you'd hear coming from your 'real' amp, For those on the go, it would just prove to be a crucial standby unit when all else fails.

Tuned to '20

The EHX camp will have this mini pedal tuner for 2020 so it's no excuse for you not to have one on your pedal board; space constraints will not be an acceptable pretext. The good thing is, it's affordable, listing for USD39 & comes with a complementary PSU - how about that?

Pedal power

This isn't the first by EHX. The 44 Magnum & 22 Caliber were ahead of the 5mm. There are many people out there who put less faith in solid state power when it comes to amps but this isn't about pitting tube finesse against the also rans.
