Fractal: FX 8

Some of us had been waiting for this with bated breath; a Fractal floor unit (because we can't do rack units - downright impractical for home use per se). But here's the let down- it's a 'multi-effects pedalboard', to quote the manufacturer. This means all those menacing amp simulators are omitted, hopefully for a later development.

Why would you want a Fractal in the first place? For multi-effects application? That's not what made the Axe-FX units so monumental to begin with. Players are after that amp voicings in there, many of whom would readily give up their actual amps for this substitute. You'd say amp simulation technology are in numerous existence these days; yes, but they don't sound like a Fractal. Upon hearing/ reading this release I felt rather betrayed (personally, at least) because it's like releasing a Les Paul without a cutaway, a Strat without single coils, A Marshall without a Brit-voicing, A MESA Dual Rectifier without overdrive- you get the drift. I was looking forward to purchase this as a tribute to reputable digital technology but it's effectively off my list now.

Fractal is flooring it

It's unannounced & not pre-empted so it's a real surprise for everyone- Fractal has released a floor unit. That's right, the manufacturer has promised a faithful re-creation of its rack version in a multi-fx setting, more details to come in Summer NAMM. This is definitely a good thing for those of us who avoided Fractal due to the necessary entailment of having to purchase a power amp. On a personal note, I'd give it a go & maybe purchase one if it's 'right'. But my right may not be yours :-)

Axe FX II

I think many of us here are still waiting to at least try the Fractal Axe-FX but the manufacturer is now offering the subsequent version as seen above...

So let us all...

... continue to wait.

Fractal After

For the recording of  After, Ihsahn communicated with guitarist Jeff Loomis (Nevermore) on grounds of common tonal appreciation. Apparently, Ihsahn believes Jeff Loomis & himself have a common liking/ implement in manifesting the heavy tone. We note both guitarists play more than 6 strings & have active pickups in their instruments.

When Ihsahn related to Jeff Loomis about using LINE 6, he was recommended the Fractal pre-amp instead which worked along the lines of the former product but has its own refinements in terms of distortion & clarity. Currently, Fractal products are not available off-the-shelf, online reservations are the way to go.
