Light case

Didn't know this is actually real; a hardcase with a lighting feature for those of us meddling with gear in the dark. Obviously aimed at the pros who require such visual assistance. Available at Davis GMC (GAtor GC-ELEC-LED $180).

Price watch (22)

Swee Lee has the black version for $249. OK, so it's the nostalgic brown version with the silk blanket that looks very well taken care of (I think it's Canadian) but it's more than 2x the price of what you can get for new.

Similar price issue here; when it was still available at Swee Lee, it was $1,399.

The bleeding

I've been repeatedly sharing with you folks about how the adhesive of a hard case interior would bleed glue & damage instrument parts. Well I was determined to provide visual evidence so that we can take precautions when storing instruments over a prolonged period of time. The above pic shows a used guitar string envelope lined against the hard case neck rest. The instrument's neck was placed on top of this piece of paper & intentionally stored away for more than 2 months. As you can see, the adhesive or whatever liquid discharge that bled through the fur lining got absorbed by the paper.

This is the flip side view of the same piece of paper & the visible stain there; note the stain on the fur lining as well. I began to suspect something was amiss when my guitar neck felt sticky every time it's removed from the hard case. The metal parts that came into contact with this discharge were the worst affected - corroded beyond belief. You might say that it's the consequence of extended storage, I should have played more often & removed the instrument out of the case. However, some of us need to observe prolonged storage due to work assignments (especially when we are out fo the country for weeks) & home improvements among other circumstances. Leaving them out of the case is not a wise option as it is an invitation to mishaps.

I personally feel that the satin blankets that were used in the hard cases not too long ago should not have been phased out to address this issue.

Hot case

Taking advantage of the hot day - gave this mouldy hard case a good wipe down & dried it in the sun.

Price case

Let's take a look at this.

And then, this.

The bag costs more than the hard case. OK, maybe the Taylor name there is a legit reason for the bag to be listed that much. The hard case is an SKB offering & does not bear the Taylor name. But what does the international market say?

USA
  • Taylor bag: 100
  • SKB Hard case: 137
CANADA
  • Taylor bag: 139
  • SKB hard case: 144
Regardless of the prices, the bag still costs less than the hard case. Anyway, who are we to say that Item A should cost less than Item B, yes? We don't own a store, we don't ship in container loads of stuff - what the heck do we really know. Hmm...

Gibson 2019- moving on (3)

This is part of Gibson's 2019 release; an upscale hard case. What do you see here beyond the obvious? Price increase.

The case of seeing clearly

This is a more applicable acquisition for the pro performers dealing with dimly lit stages & backrooms. OK, so it could be a case of seeing things at a remote corner of our houses without waking everyone up in the middle of the night. But how many of us would be that tragic? 😁 Anyway, thumbs up to a practical consideration.

Before things take a turn for the worse (price/ availability), might as well. 😑

Case considerations

Finally, the yelow Ibanez RG550 got a case. I was contemplating whether this guitar deserves one or not. At the end of it all, it's not about such considerations- whether a certain guitar deserves an extended accessory- it's about how much you care for your possessions, guitar or otherwise.

The case in question (Gibson 2016)

Well, well, well... if you choose to purchase any Gibson 2016 HP model, this is the hard case offered WEF 2016. I truly prefer a rectangular case for a more 'stackable' experience. It also looks like the lack of leather would prevent a moldy case (no pun intended). 😄

Dead case

The hard case you see here belonged to my Gibson SG Standard. As you can see, the plush lining came apart.

A closer look at what I was referring to- the brown stains you see in the first picture were glue stains or whatever adhesive the manufacturer used to assemble this case.

When I thought the perimeter of the case was the only affected areas, a look into the accessories compartment revealed otherwise.

Even the base areas were not spared.

Gibson wasn't responsible for this because its instrument cases were OEMed by other manufacturers. In this case, it's the Canadian manufacturer, TKL, a rather renowned name in this industry. Whatever the situation had come to, I acknowledge the fact that deterioration happens over time, regardless of whatever brand name goodwill you uphold. The loser here is the buyer who wasn't pre-empted of this adversity. However, let's not rule out the fact that some adversities are unique cases & should not reduce the standing of the manufacturer in view of the proportionately larger success stories compared to the disastrous records. But a quick reminder to the manufacturers out there; do not deny the fact that shit happens every now & then.

As for the dead case here, it was thrown away immediately, no sentimentalities on my part. It might look salvageable in pictures but it's a terrible decay if you were dealing with it in person. The whole plush lining was sticky, it's like some clumsy bear spilled honey there.

Orange in the case

When the year draws to a close & you have fulfilled your purchase intentions, you look back at what you have & think of ways to better address some needs.

I have basically closed my accounts for 2013 so some funding goes to storage provisions. My Jackson DK2T was given a deserving resting place; a GATOR GC-ELECTRICA-A hard case. As you can see above, it sports a universal headstock compartment space so it will accommodate many designs. I'm also making it a point to avoid buying fibre-type cases for a simple reason- they attract mold.

A case from Rondo

This arrived yesterday, from the good chaps at Rondo Music; they're one of the very few stores who ship directly to this country (bless them). So is this good? Definitely. It means there is no rubbish, ridiculous & excessive freight charges typical of forwarding entities out there.

Nothing fancy, I bought a hard case from them to fit a longer scale guitar. Seen here is my Ibanez S-series 7-string. This particular model promises to fit extended scale models, baritone ones included, regardless of the headstock design. As you can see above, there's ample space at the headstock vicinity. Happy :-)

This won't be my last encounter with Rondo music. Definitely not.

The resting greenie

The greenie Ibanez (S1XXV) finally gets a lush resting place. So my objective of giving deserving hard cases to both my 25th Anniversary models had been met. This puts a close to my March gear expenditure.

The case in question here is Ibanez's RG140C.

Anew

The mouldy Ibanez Destroyer guitar case- remember that one? After a wipe down with damp cloth & letting it dry, I applied this Fender vinyl cleaner fluid. It's a little excessive to be treating it this way but has that restored look I like. Makes it look newer than it should be.
