Rob's guitar is actually based on the discontinued Horizon bolt-on; same body/neck wood, same electronics layout but features a simpler bridge unit. No wonder it looks familiar :-)

Hello, I've been reading your blog for quite a while but its my first time commenting ;)
Anyways, I've been thinking of getting the Zoom G3. So I was also looking to pair it up with a new amp too since I'm going to sell my Microcube to a friend of mine. So I was looking for a good simple amp that doesn't have any effects on it (due to the Zoom G3 handling effects)
Any recomendations? Oh and this would be mainly for bedroom practicing. Some of the amps I've been looking at are the Peavey Rage 258, Kustom 112fx and Laney LX20
hope someday they make this "leaf/tongue" shaped headstock as a normal production on LTD H-series again
Bro Ijau: not in the mean time, bro...
Zhar: Hey, bro- thanks for coming by...
IMO, you'd do well to consider a single channel tube amp to propel your Zoom, unless you are averse to such amps... :-)
No problem man, I enjoy reading your stuff ;)
Well right now, I'm open to anything. Single channel tube amps eh? Any specific models that comes to mind? Preferably in the budget range?
Oh and not too loud, and quite portable because I'll be bringing to and from my home and campus/rented home.
what's your budget like?
Hmmm..well I live in Malaysia. My budget at first (when I was considering SS amps) was anything near RM500.
But since we're talking about a tube amps, i guess I'll have to increase it a lil bit?
RM500 is around 200SGD?
VHT Special 6- check it out :-)
I've checked it out and it sounds cool :)
I'm still waiting for a price quote from the VHT distributor here. Meanwhile, I've checked some other amps; Bugera V5, Kustom Tube12 and Laney Cub12. Ever played any of these?
bro,
CUB12: Good for the money but to my ears, the VHT sounds more appealing
i've only heard Kustom's Defender 5H in actio, must say it's rather under-rated, sounds very appealing
if you have to choose a combo, stick to one with a 12" driver :-)
Oh I see, so when you recommmended the VHT Special6 you meant the Head then?
I think to get a tube Head and a cabinet to go with it will be out of my budget range.
In fact, a tube is kinda out of my budget already, which makes me think maybe i should just get decent SS amp thats not too expensive first and start saving to get a good Head & Cabinet in the future. You think thats a good idea?
both the combo & stack versions of the VHT are good :-)
Oh cool...but, unfortunately the distributor here does'nt have the Special6 =(
I was thinking of maybe getting a 12" SS amp, and saving up for a Tube later on. Any thoughts on SS amps?
the issue with SS amps generally, is their flat response in clean mode. they may be stellar in distortion mode though but we often see many players investing in SS amps to propel their pedals or multi-fx units. SS models with impressive clean channels are really limited but i hear good fundamental cleans from Ibanez/ Laney/ Kustom models. are these brand names available at your dealer's?
Oh I see, well out of those three brands Kustom and Laney I've seen in guitar stores. Ibanez amps I don't see so much but they're still attainable via postage.
From what I've found, only the Kustom has a 12" SS amp in their 'practice' line of amps. Two amps that are within my original budget are the Laney LX12 and LG12 but those have 6" speakers.
Quick summary of what I've found..
Amps within budget:
- Laney LX12 6"
- Laney LG12 6"
- Laney LX20 8"
- Kustom KG110 10"
Amps just above my budget:
- Laney LX20R 8"
- Laney LG20R 8"
- Kustom KG112fx 12"
*Laney LX12 being the cheapest and Kustom KG112fx the most expensive
