If darkness

My days of looking forward to Metallica's music was over a long time ago. There are members within my music circle who are still ardent fans & they prompted me to this new track saying it's a come-back material. Listen to Hammett's solo starting at 4:17 & consider if it's a botched take or not - to think that this guy used to write some of the most memorable solos in metaldom. Metallica is still treading the commercial overtones trying to appease the black album posse. Nothing has changed.

Blackened in a ghost town

So people are busy making music indoors. I think if your Youtube feeds consist of the latest happenings in music, you would have probably watched Metallica's 2020 version of blackened. I see it as a confused offering. We have 3/4 of the band very enthusiastic in seeing the new version of this 33 year old song through while 1/4 of them rests in the fact that he participated and most probably owned the song more than any of the other three members. 

Now compare that to the Rolling Stone's Living in a Ghost Town. Nuff said.

Seriously, they made Metallicash Metallicrap Metallica Funko figures so you can now have them on your car's dashboards, workspace & wherever you may roam want them to be. Hilarious but it shows how much money there is to be had with the (band) name. Whatever.

Limited killing (LTD content)

Come 25th July, this limited edition LTD guitar will be released to commemorate Metallica's 30th Anniversary of their Kill 'Em All album. However, only 300 units are available worldwide...

Kill 'Em All wasn't my first Metallica album, Garage Days Re-revisited was it. It got me listening to ...And Justice for All in my early adolescent years. At that point in time, it was really hell trying to locate all of the band's previous releases- nobody did a re-issue/ re-print until much later towards the early 1990s. All this was on cassette tape & that was when I bought Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning & Master of Puppets in a single purchase. Those were the days...

Shock inc.

Not too long ago, I was in an art immersion programme. One of the topics presented for discussion was the value of shock in art. The extent of which was indeed sensitivity explosion when it comes to religious concern. Religious imagery are deemed sacred & never to be used carelessly, let alone for artistic dabbling I am revisiting this matter because recently, an image displayed on this blog was removed upon request as it was deemed spiritually offensive. I took heed in the name of consideration, it is well understood that what was perfectly acceptable for some of us is outright blasphemous to the rest. I do not wish to lose friendship because I somehow became privy to the development of light-vs-dark episodes. 

The art work you see above would have been praiseworthy to the uninformed but to the rest of us who know it by its title- Piss Christ- it's outright blasphemy for the artist to cover it in a layer of urine.

The artist is the same guy who had his work, Blood & Semen III, as Metallica's cover art for the LOAD album; Andress Serrano. Why 'blood', why 'semen'? The image was created by mixing animal blood & his own semen, pressed between two sheets of plexiglass...

You'd argue that there might be a fine line between art & sacrilegious event posters but let's understand the fact that both are intellectual products serving an intent. In any case, people wouldn't want blasphemy in any manifestations, it's just unacceptable whichever way you swerve.

Black anniversary

12th August was Metallica's black album anniversary- 20 years ago we bought this black bundle, some of us loved it while the rest of us felt that the money could have gotten us some other worthy albums. I was in the latter camp. It was quite the case of not hearing what you want to hear from the guys whom you've trusted to churn out some of the most commanding music in heavy metaldom.

The songs in there were definitely worthy music- that's incontestable but some of us simply find them unacceptable coming from Metallica. Whatever the case was, I bought the cassette tape format & dumped it into a canal on my way home. The cover sleeve went up in smoke- no kidding, I burnt it. There's no loss of a good cover art, yes? It's barely illustrated, after the incendiary process, it still looked... em... black. He, he...
