LP - SG

Good day, folks. Hope the Monday started well for all of us. Just leaving some things here when it comes to the LP - SG dimensions. As you can see above, the SG is actually longer than the LP. Many of us wouldn't have noticed this until they are placed side by side like this.

Do take note of these measurements as well; the SG body width (longer than the LP) & the bridge distance to the body edge (more than the LP). Why are these important? If you buy a bag that fits the LP, it does not automatically fit an SG. Same goes for hard cases. Also, if you wish to mod the bridge to let say a Bigsby type, that distance to the edge might make / break your plans. Before we go, the LP you see above weighs 3.9kg, while the SG is 2.9kg. So if you had been playing an LP all along & wish for something less spine-taxing, a switchover is a valid move.

Disclaimer

The SG featured above is the SG Special T (2017) which features 24 frets. Does this make the neck longer than the SG Standard featuring only 22 frets? 

Answer: No. The 23rd & 24th frets are actually occupying the empty space as indicated above.

The Studio

It's been Gibson for the last few days or so. When I bought this LP Studio about 5 years ago, everyone in the store was talking about its looks. Granted it sports one of the more captivating flame top in its range, but I bought it for its weight.

That's right, the weight of this guitar is in the hefty range so it's gonna take a toll on your back if it's played strapped on. The thing about heavy LPs is that it brings out the strength of what this guitar was supposed to excel in traditionally- tone. The lighter & chambered LPs of today (regardless of the model) has something missing in this department & we can attribute that to more air in the body as opposed to more wood. However, the Gibson chaps did manage to strike a balance between structural considerations & ear candy somewhat because the LPs of today don't muck up at higher volume/ gain settings. As much as it is about the pickups manifesting clarity, it's also about the right mass manifesting the desired resonance for some magic to happen. 

I re-strung this guitar & gave it a good wipe down. The rosewood fretboard benefitted from some light re-conditioning. 

Heads up!!

The above pic was taken off the manufacturer's website. It's an ad for a special strap aimed at addressing the neck-heavy issue of some instruments. The product: Heads Up strap, guaranteed to hold the instrument's neck up when it threatens to kamikaze.

The neat little trick lies inside the pocket at the body end of the strap...

...which actually houses a weight to counter the neck-heavy pull. It's like tying a brick to your current strap but that wouldn't be as neat as this one, wouldn't it?

Before anyone asks, I've yet to see this product in the stores here..
