Post - Rebel

Many of us would have read about the passing of Rebel, Billy Sheehan's beloved cat. This happened last year. 

Just days ago, the Sheehan household welcomed two new family members into the fold - Pistachio & Pepper.

I can totally relate to this episode of bereavement. Many of us are very attached to our pets. I am certainly one of them. Days before I got married, my cat died. It took a good while for me to recover & finally accepted another feline into the greater scheme of things. Having a pet, regardless of what it is, reinforces that sense of commitment & satisfaction that we did not know we need & for some of us, this helps to keep our lucidity in check. To all pet owners out there - salute!

Thanks, everyone, for your generous contributions. We are now in the final week of August, it's the week where I try not to think of the unemployment ahead & all uncertainties heading my way. Come what may, it's a reality check that I gladly embrace. If you can spare some loose change, I am more than grateful being at the receiving end. 

30th Attitude

 

Yamaha commemorates its 30th anniversary collaboration with Billy Sheehan with this bass. The colour is a little boring but it's the colour of Sheehan's first P-bass (aka The Wife) so it's a walk down memory lane. Yamaha makes good basses, really. If you've handled an upper tier model, you know it's the works; everything so classy from one end of the instrument to the other. If you don't already noticed, Yamaha invests more time, resources, R&D & marketing for their basses than their guitars (in the mean time). However, many of us do not look up to Yamaha as a formidable name in musical instruments, we are distracted by their motorbikes, boat engines & pianos.

Here's a new one by EBS- it's a signature Billy Sheehan bass pedal, it's a drive unit with on-board compressor feature. There's a loop access there, that's the plus.

2012: Hits and misses (5)

HIT: Alex Hutchings was here for a captivating performance. His set-up would question your need to embrace costly tube tones as 'good tones' per se could be achieved in so many ways, this way shouldn't be overlooked.

MISS: Portnoy/ Sheehan/ Sherinian/ MacAlpine's performance here clashed with Phil X's. It's not about the quality of the prformance, mind you, just the rotten fact of coincidence. Yes, it's unavoidable to a certain extent but this could have been better planned.

Desirable Attitude

This is one of those instruments which screams 'Get me!' just by looking at it. New for 2011, this is Billy Sheehan's Yamaha Attitude Limited III bass. The rail-type pickups you see here is a Yamaha Custom Woofer model which doesn't hide under any covers like its predecessors; it's very visible & menacing. Yamaha makes some of the most desirable basses, even more desirable than their guitars but I don't see a healthy availability for these instruments here in the mean time.

Remember I recently highlighted Billy Sheehan's new Yamaha BB-type bass?

Upon further sleuthing, it seems that this isn't Sheehan's first foray with the BB bass as evident in the Rotosound ad above, which was like in the '80s...

Yamaha: BB714BS (New Billy Sheehan bass)

Q: What's a bass update doing in a guitar blog?
A: Well, it's not just another bass, it's the latest Billy Sheehan signature bass, BB714BS.

Q: It's still a bass isn't it?
A: Yes it is but it's the blogger's accolade for the player- Billy Sheehan.

Q: Why bother?
A: Billy Sheehan can out-play a guitar player any time, if you have not see him play, you'll be asking too many questions.

Q: So the Attitude bass is gone?
A: Nope- it's still in the Yamaha line-up.

Q: The BB714BS isn't exactly new...
A: It's definitely adapted from Yamaha's BB design but the electronics are to the endorser's specs.
