Re-string Sunday

Wanted to go for an early morning walk but it poured, breakfast was indoors as well. Gave my S570B a re-string. Had not been playing this one for a while because I'm not really into 24-fretted S-Series any more; these just turn me off. This one, I  kept because it sounded awesome after the pickups swap: Seymour Duncan Jazz / QP Staggered / Custom. Also, bought Curt Mangan strings to re-live the moments. Not returning to this brand due to the price increase.

The Custom is an interesting pickup, it's a ceramic magnet pickup but voiced to be medium output with a generous treble serving. Despite being scooped-sounding, I don't hear much of this through the amp. That's why we need to hear pickups in action as opposed to relying on the manufacturer's EQ spec.

Curt @ Davis

A little belated but be informed that Curt Mangan strings are now available at Davis GMC. My first encounter with this brand name was back in 2008 when they were sold at G77. These are very close in feel to Ernie Balls but in my opinion, they last a little longer on the average. Be informed that Curt Mangan used to work for Ernie Ball.

Final pack: Curt Mangan strings

This was my final pack of Curt Mangan .0095 set... went into my Les Paul BFG. Curt Mangan strings are still available at G77 but not the .0095 version. The Curt Mangan has everything right for me, durability, feel & price. Gallistring & Pyramid are the closest in feel to the Curt Mangan, but not offered in the .0095 version...

Re-string: G-LP

Gave my Grassroots G-LP-50S a re-string- Curt Mangan .0095 set, which I'm running out of. G77 does have the CM strings in store but not the .0095s... I simply love the feel of these strings, very similar to the Pyramids but with extra crunch. Sometimes, all it takes is a fresh set of strings to enjoy playing.

Mangan Steel

Gave my RG321 a cleaning up:
  • oiled the body
  • cleaned fretboard
  • polished frets
  • re-string: CURT MANGAN .009 Steel set
What's the thrill of having a set of steel strings in one's guitar? Steel gives off a bright tone but this lasts while the freshness is in tact. It's also a little stiffer in feel, very rewarding for players who attack their guitars the moment they plug in (especially if you prefer thick picks). Curt Mangan is currently my preferred string brand as it's able to retain the feel & tone despite wearing out. Magic? Maybe but I guess it's the Ernie Ball mojo rubbing off the man- he's an ex-Ernie Ball employee FYI but let not this credit patronize the very fact that CM strings are superb per se.

Curt Mangan/ D'Addario

I have a set of .0095 gauge string in all my 24.75"-scaled guitars. The industry recommends the use of a .010 set instead to maintain a more useable tension in standard tuning but it seems that these are too thick for me (frail fingers, lack of calcium maybe?). I'm currently employing the Curt Mangan & D'Addario sets on specific guitars. Thusfar, I've become accustomed to both string brands but I have a preference for the former's tone durability even when they are quite weathered. Nevertheless, I would pledge my support to the latter for being environmental darlings- less envelopes, less trash, less trees being sacrificed.
