Small timers

Following the Mooer D-15 entry, a reader wrote in asking me if there is a comparable unit that I'd recommend since he's interested in a lug-friendly amp head & that the D-15's availability is unconfirmed (in the mean time). 

Mooer's D-15 (A) is a digital unit & its strength lies in the clarity heard from the demo clip supplemented in that blog post. There isn't any quite like it in the stores here in the mean time but in terms of dimensions, Peavey's Piranha 6505 (B) is a worthy contender, so is Vox's MV series (C). The idea of a small, portable amp head isn't new. In fact, I used to own a Crate Power Block (D) which was a no nonsense solidstate unit (discontinued in 2010/ 2011).

Little killer

What you see here:

This has been my practice set up for days. At times, the guitars were on rotation but I keep coming back to the M-53 which had its action further lowered recently. There's a digital effects unit in the chain (the Pocket POD Express) so whichever guitar I employ didn't really matter because the final tone coming out from the drivers, is rather generic. Hence, it's all about feel & precision which my M-53 has plenty.

The Killer Ant churns out only a mere 1W for my sonic assault but it'll bring many other bigger wattage amps to their knees. Thanx to the 4x12 cab which makes it sound bigger than it should be. Contrary to convenient opinion, lower wattage amps need not be restrained in its performance. It's all about knowing what you are dealing with in action.

Busker...

The average busker today isn't one armed with pathetic equipment. The visually impaired individual above was seen with a Godin guitar & Crate amp, chances are, his equipment is more desireable than ours...

Remembering my ex... (Part 2)

It's rather unbelievable that the above amp head, no bigger than your average clock radio, packs a 150W capacity. When it (CRATE Power Block) was with me, it had no problems competing with my 100W Marshall JVM; the manufacturer intended it to deliver fundamental amplification without the hassle & it did just that. My only gripe was that it should be equipped with a reverb function as standard feature.

The Power Block had been discontinued in lieu of a subsequent model which had not appeared to date... Bummer.

Crate: Profiler 5

I was at Yamaha today, saw this neat little amp (CRATE: Profiler 5) which is a clear intent by the manufacturer; it's joining the league of small, killer, practive units. So here's fair warning to the CUBEs (Roland) & DAs (Vox) out there. Didn't try it as I was distracted by something else... yet again.
