Dallas driving

This is one of those pedals you should be checking out if you are interested in a mild-to-hard drive settings. That colour there is a little suggestive- we know which OD pedal has a green finish & is rather renowned for its capability. It's also one of Modtone's current range of drive pedals that does not fancy an elaborate outer appearance.

Mod drive

Was looking at the Modtone sale @ SV Guitars, I tried whatever drive pedals there were in store & this one was the most appealing. Bought.

Modtone: Bohemian OD

This red little ditty is one of Modtone's overdrive units featuring simple controls & pedal board-friendly footprint for us tone dweebs. The knobs here are aluminum, adding a touch of class at this price range. In addition to the standard layout, the pedal features a boost function activated via that flick switch there marked +/-.

The Bohemian isn't a mild driver to begin with. In terms of a familiar reference, Boss' Super OD would be a good understanding of the type of intensity involved but things get a little shoved & mean once the booster is engaged. With all due respect to the British voicing touted by the manufacturer, I'm still trying to understand the relevance to such a claim after spending 20min with it & having tried different configurations, I don't hear that Brit grit in this one.

What does the Bohemian have in store for you, then? Some fat overdrive & nothing subtle. That's right, the Bohemian would have been a standard affair if not for that drive control that adds extra volume to proceedings in addition to making it more scooped sounding once dialed up. The addition of such intensity can be heard rather early so if you wish for a subtle drive type for that bluesy moments, the Bohemian might be out of place. Engaging the booster option at higher drive settings simply turns the pedal into a boom unit with lots of bottom end thump.

Selling: Modtone OD

This under-utilized Modtone OD pedal belongs to Mr. Dzulhilmi. He feels that it deserves a new owner since he's now more inclined towards other effects types. If you are interested (asking: $50), please get back to him: 8-1-27-640-5

High gainer(s)

Some days ago, I was @ SV to try out the MINI High Gainer pedal but since both versions are in stock, I had a go at both of them. Both pedals serve the common intention of dishing out hotter-than-standard distortion without breaking into the metal boundary. Some of us prefer this kinda voicing because it prooves to be more dynamic than the typical heavy metal type distortion. It gives us both the crunchy/intense modes just by dialling in the desired GAIN amount. However, do note that the MINI High Gainer has a more protrusive treble response which remains flagrant even when the EQ is dialed in to snub that top end. If you are on a budget & wish to own the MINI version, be sure to offset this with a good post-gain EQ. Otherwse, go with the standard size High Gainer featuring a more charismatic EQ section (despite being 2-band)- from FAT to SHRIEK, it's all there.

Mini Mod

So how small are those Modtone Minis? As you can see here, Dora The Explorer could very well reach the control knobs without platform assistance.

The mini's underside features a foam pad which assists the pedal in staying put on the ground if you do not wish to Velcro it down to your pedal board but this proves to be rather ineffective as the pedal per se is too light to be tug resistant.

It's the final day of July, with Summer NAMM as the primary source of exhilaration for use gear dweebs, but the was no personal appeal, gear-wise, for me. Add to this the depleting reserves for gear funding.
