Schecter: Omen 7... TESLA-rised

Ah... my Schecter Omen 7 is back to life. Recent ailments:

• Dead pot
• 3-way pickup selector- unreliable contact

Sent it to Beez for parts replacement. The selector issue was no surprise, other Schecter owners related to me how theirs couldn't maintain a good contact despite have them sprayed (with contact spray) countless times. My advice to you- get it replaced, it doesn't cost much.

While I was at it, I managed to swap the pickups with a pair of TESLA Plasma 7s- yeah! I love how these sound in this guitar; lots of distortion clarity + a little surprise in the cleans :-)

Rectification (2)

The second guitar to have its innards looked into was my Jackson DKMGT. See the 2 push-pull knobs there? 

1. Coil-split selector
2. Turbocharger pre-amp selector

Since the Turbocharger (defunct) could accept other passive pickups, I had the EMG-HZ removed & replaced with a pair of Tesla pickups: Plasma 3 (bridge) & Plasma 7 (neck). The EMG-HZ are fine pickups, they sound good in many other guitars but in this Jackson, they are too fuzzy especially with the Turbocharger activated. The Teslas are simply wonderful in this application, a wonderful boom & some slicing lead tones to be heard.

Orange! Jackson JS-20

Since I was at Beez's the other day, I had him instal an Orage Drop cap in my Jackson (JS-20) as well.

Not forgetting the coil split push-pull switch for the (TESLA) Plasma 7 humbucker. Am I obliged to have it in all guitars with pickups sporting a 4-conductor wiring? Not at all but it gives me more choices in terms of tone.

TESLA! Jackson JS-20...

I was at Beez's yesterday to have my Jackson JS-20 equipped with a set of TESLA pickups:

• Neck: VR-1
• Middle: Plasma 1
• Bridge: Plasma 7

I'm a fan of the VR-1 (have it in my Brian Moore guitar as well), it has that vintage voicing which sounds splendid with lots of distortion, this way, I don't lose out on both clean & driven tones. Ditto the Plasma 1 but this pickup has a more contemporary single coil tone. If you are a blues fan, chances are, you'd prefer the VR-1 instead. The Plasma 7- it sounds great under lots of signal processing. If you are pedals-inclined & have limited clean moments, you'd like the Plasma 7. In fact, it'll size-up against the average DiMarzio in this aspect but be warned that it's not that appealing in lighter-bodied guitars.

Billy the bug gave my new set of Tesla pickups a thumbs-up (but I couldn't see his thumbs, though...) before heading home. So my Kramer Striker S-424 now sports the following pickups:

• Neck: Plasma 7
• Mid: Plasma 1
• Bridge: Plasma 7
