Fighting

I think some of you are rather sick of seeing such dead parts but at my end, I feel it necessary to share the need to keep things in check. This is a dead tone pot, of course, eaten away by corrosion. We usually maintain such features in our guitars by spraying contact cleaners once thing don't feel as smooth as it should be.

This isn't a corroded implement, just the guitar's truss rod cover which necessitated this destruction...

... in order to access this dead screw. It was severely rounded during an attempt to remove it so accessing the exposed thread there helped with getting a grip while turning it loose using a pair of pliers.

After an upsetting bout, it finally came off.

Replacement truss rod covers were purchased online.

I'm also kinda sick & tired of Ibanez's cosmo black finish. This is a fusion between black & chrome & invites stain very easily. If your hand is oily for instance, the stain will be permanent however much you polish the surface. It becomes a bright stain rather than disappearing.

The guitar in question is my Ibanez RG721. It looks rather pristine here after some maintenance time & that's the sure thing that would happen to my instruments- taking time to put in place what's wasted.

Ibanez 2017

Ibanez finally dropped its 2017 bomb. From the looks of it, there are many regurgitations & come-backs which don't really signal anything fresh. I'm taking it easy with the updates. We begin with the Roadcore series which many of us are oblivious to. The RC220 here is the new entry level in the series with a fixed bridge instead of the tune-o-matic through body type.

Ibanez now has an ash body + maple fretboard Standard RG model- RG370AHM. The unsettling indicator here is the manufacturer's return to the generic black headstocks. Darn! 😠

A new Premium RG721, this time with eye-catching maple top (spalted) & maple fretboard (birdseye). The 2016 RG721 sported a rosewood top. We get a hint of self-preservation here; Ibanez wants the RG721 to live on but the situation with rosewood these days (CITES enforcements) pressured the manufacturer to manifest this maple version. I'm sure many of us wouldn't mind the change.

Ibanez @ Swee Lee

A couple of new Ibanez guitars at Swee Lee (BB branch). First up is this gorgeous RG721 with that stunning maple top plus a matching headstock. I already own the rosewood top version so playing this today was a checking exercise. Everything is as good as it looks, just a reminder pertaining to that pair of default CAP-VM pickups; nothing too different from the INF models in the standard RG range. However, the sweeter alnico voicing makes the difference.

The other equally captivating (albeit acquired taste) guitar is this S771 sporting a poplar burl top. The instrument is incredibly light due to its aerodynamic body design & an absence of a heavy whammy bridge. Initially, played unplugged, the guitar is rather insignificant tone-wise but that's not the highlight of the performance. The amped tones were something else, very cutting edge & it'd give something to think about when it comes to the default INF pickups.

Prices have yet to be confirmed. Thanks to Mr. Faizal @ Swee Lee BB for the update & appraisal invitation.

DiMarzio-ed: RG721

Acquired some pickups lately, this pair included: DiMarzio D-Sonic (bridge)/ Air Norton (neck).

If you've read my other DiMarzio entries, you'll know that I'm not a keen DiMarzio fan but I won't exclude the good tones I hear from any pickup brands.

The DiMarzio pair you see above are in my Ibanez RG721. The D-Sonic gets my thumbs up for clarity but it has a generous bass response & the way you orientate the pole pieces affects the bass response (seriously). I like it this way as it complements heavy distortion. The Air Norton- it's something I've tried before & liked. I still like it for that midrange emphasis & warmth in the neck position, it's not as commanding in the bridge.

Beez- superb workmanship as usual!

I have 3 other guitars awaiting pickups swap, hoping to get them done over the next few days...

Ibanez: RG721 (Part 2)

The majesty of the Ibanez RG721 is definitely its rosewood laminate. It adorns the body as well as the instrument's headstock. It gives rise to class without the need for a final gloss coat but not everyone's into this. The fact that there isn't gloss in places where it should be means those surfaces ding easily. The irony of this consideration is that, at the end of the day, people want a vintage- 'relic' if you will- look from their instrument. It's all about losing the gloss & feeling the bare wood of your instrument which is exactly what the RG721 is all about.

That laminate implement is sheer class alright but it necessitated a more economical decal application over at the headstock so as not to break the unity of that wood feel. Unlike other gloss finished headstocks, the Ibanez logo/ decal here is a silk-screened transfer. So if you are captivated by the classic beauty of this guitar, the situation over at the headstock would be an economical reminder of the things that be.

Ibanez: RG721 (Part 1)

Brand new guitar for a brand new month: Ibanez RG721 :-)

Despite the stunning looks, the RG721 is a typical mahogany-bodied instrument; lots of midrange zing & clarity in the neck humbucker.

Stunning Premium

Come... let's take a look at what's NOT (regional exclusive) gonna be available here but it's out there anyway- Ibanez's screaming RG721. The eye candy is largely attributable to the guitar's sonokeling top- that's rosewood to the rest of us. What we have here in our market is the (aguably boring) RG821, while the Americans get the RG921  (the RG821 + a quilted maple top).
