On SALE @ SV Guitars

Some stuff are on sale at SV Guitars, I'd recommend the above pedals (I own them) if you are looking for something above average but nothing excessive.

Hotone: Wally Looper
A simple looping unit, something that would definitely squeeze onto your pedal board. Has great clarity & that elusive output control, it actually adds gain to your signal.

Artec: Gainer Boost
One of the numbered boost units out there that feature an EQ section. Set the bass to nought & pump up the treble for a -you guessed it- a treble boost function. Raise the bass & set the treble to 20% - 25% setting for a smooth legato application. All this without muddy-ing out or sounding too piercing. This isn't merely a volume boost, the gain adds a good amount of drive to your settings, do note.

Grass pop

There's always an overdrive itch in me. This was from the SV Sale yesterday. It's quite a mistake to be there on a weekend, was at the store but had to wait for about 40min for the crowd to clear before getting to try all I wanted to. The narrow passageway didn't help either. Unless other pedals are added to the sale, I've basically checked out whatever there is to try.

Hotone: Lift Up (2)

This was the line-up yesterday; the Hotone Lift Up went to the end of the signal chain. It was a blast & I must say that I'm happy with the inclusion. I'm largely a guitar-into-amp person, the reason I am going through this trouble is because I'm short-listing some pedals for a board. Yes, I would want a pedal board for days when I plug into a clean amp to humour my boredom. The objective is to put together a smallest possible board for personal use. Two more pedals & I'm done :-)

Hotone: Lift up

If size matters, then the bigger pedals would out-tone the little ones but we know that's not the case. Hotone pedals would easily fit into your palms & they pack a punch. Some serious punching, at that. Anyway, the Lift Up here is a boost unit, a clean boost. Something you'd employ to beef up your solos. The deal with many clean boosts is that they give you a higher serving of volume & that's it. The more adventurous booster pedals add some gain into the mix, making your signals break up like a tube amp set at upper volume levels.

My requirement- I want a boost that can do a clean volume push as well as add a little dirt when the need arises. It's gonna be difficult starting with a distortion unit or a very mild drive for that matter because it's about subtraction. One has to slowly & tactically remove the dirt amount from one's settings & it would be quite impossible to remove this entirely because one is dealing with a dirt-specialist so to speak. Clean is not an option. So this is the reason why I chose a clean boost. The idea is to bring the gain up a tad without causing too much clipping so I get to hear more of what I have without too much added flavour. I've tested some other clean boosts along the way & the Hotone Lift Up was my final pick due to that Warm function there. Besides giving the user some PAF type warmth in clean mode, this rounds up the midrange in drive mode so my tone won't end up sounding a little sharper than it should be. Done :-)

Where's Wally?

Do I need another looper? No, but I am heading somewhere with this one so it's a done deal after testing it at SV Guitars. Rather inevitable.

Hotone: Wally looper

Hotone, the name that gives you some of the little-est pedals around, has a new one- the Wally. It's a looping unit & it's as simple as it looks. Wally records your guitar phrases, enabling you to layer as many tracks as you wish subject to the internal memory's capacity (up to 15min of recording time). The controls are functional & it offers a down-tempo knob, slowing or speeding up your playing. In use, the Wally is responsive but at this size, one really has to strap it down to a board, just placing it there isn't good enough. I've no other negative highlights in this aspect other than the fact that any tempo adjustments would entail a change in pitch. If it's your first time dealing with a Hotone, be informed that they don't do batteries. Recommended for those of us who wants to keep things simple & portable.

Hotone: CHUNK

This is my other Hotone pedal, the Chunk- it's distortion for the rest of us. I'm very happy with the level of saturation on board, let alone the distortion intensity. It doesn't sound that 'metal' but with the HOT button engaged, it could do some damage. I would say the Chunk has some likeness in response with reference to Wampler's Pinnacle pedal. That's how big the Chunk is against a pick.

KOMPed

As you would have recalled reading in these entries, I'm not quite a pedal fan but time & again, I see greatness in some pedals I come across & wouldn't hesitate buying them to reinforce my tone. My latest addition is this little wonder (it's smaller than your credit card- ha!) is a Hotone Komp pedal- a compressor unit from the Skyline series.

I really wish majority of the compressor units out there are effective as this one; it adds much saturation to whichever drive/ distortion unit you couple it with. I'm currently placing it before the drive/ distortion source & it's simply great! You'd hear immediate & marked injection to your tone, increases pick sensitivity as well. If you like cascading 2 drive/ distortion sources into each other, try replacing one of those pedals with a compressor- hear more of the same but at a heightened performance, that's my best take on the situation.

Hotone pedals are available at SV Guitars, they are smaller-than-your-palm units aimed at giving more tonal performance & the obvious sacrifice here is its inability to be powered by a battery, PSU is the only way to go.
