Stack R Us

Both the Marshall & Blackheart cabs made it to my residence on the same day. This picture was taken to show the sizes of both stacks in perspective. The Killer Ant head sounds much more appealing through the BH112 as there is more transparency coming from the Eminence driver in there. It sounds rather appealing through the 1960 as well for distortion work but for cleans, the Eminence wins it.

If you are looking for an above average clean tones to propel your pedals, the Blackheart single channel heads would be good considerations. The fact they are tube laden & don't cost you a ransom should be attraction per se. To many of us, the Blackheart label is unattractive obscurity but it's actually the splinter brand by Crate.

one n00b question though, does this small type head+cab loud enough for small jamming session?

btw, have u tried vox lil'night train?

it has enough loudness for an unplugged session but with full-on drumming, you need a higher wattage unit. keep in mind the Killer Ant is a mere 1W... he he... it doesn't matter how big the stack is, it's the wattage considerations.

Lil Night Train- yup, tried it along with the LINE6 HD units days ago. it has no midrange control despite sounding as menacing as its bigger brother so it was a 'no' for me.

i guess i'll go for combo unit then... vox VT+ series looks more promising (although it's a digital one)

we should go for tone bro, regardless of it's tube/ solidstate/ digital. if you are gonna use it for a jamming session with loud drumming (ok so which drummer is 'quiet'? he he...) consider a 60W unit at least.

vox VT40+ was 60W if not mistaken... price-wise and effect-wise, it's the best offer i've seen so far

maybe it'll be the best purchase for you at the close of this 2010 :-)

Hi sub
wow, saw your heads and cabs, mighty impressed!
just curious, do you use the Marshall stacks at home or gigs?
if at home, how do you contain the loudness , or there's no need to ? :)

am struggling with loud tube heads, eyeing Marsalls Haze15/40, JMD1, etc..but think it'll be always a struggle to keep the voulme down enough to sound good. or do u use attuenator?

hi bro :-)

it's for domestic applications, he he. i'm fortunate to be living in a neighbourhood where the residences are themselves noise-oriented: loud mahjong sessions, people wailing away during karaoke sing-along, endless barking of dogs, soccer fanatics who shouted & cursed to their hearts' content... so i'm a natural addition :-)

on other days, if i wish to maintain that tube goodness after dark, this little ditty here would be employed: http://theguitaraddict.blogspot.com/2010/05/ehx-signal-pad.html

Ha, i see!
but i guess the roar of a 100Watt Marshall tube amp sure beats any karaoke, majong and dogs anytime, ha!

dunno man, sold my Blackstar HT5 because it can get too loud sometimes.. and now trying the POD HD route to see can get good tones at lower volume or not. but still itching for a new tube head (egnater tweaker, Marshall haze, JMD105, Laney cub 12..arrghh!), the GAS gets terribly worst when following your blog. :)

volume tolerance is subjective, some people can take it, others can't. the other component in dealing with this is understanding- the lay person in general, doesn't understand the nature of tube amps which should be played loud. these people are our spouses, children, parents, etc.

the HD amp, frankly speaking, don't sound as appealing as the floor units hooked up to monitors. i feel this is the LINE6 quirk- they sound exceptional in a non-amp application.

totally agreed!

Sub, ha! i'll take that as a hint that you DO get the "too loud, turn it down!!" from your spouse and kid etc.. tot u are excluded from the club :)

the HD400 i'm running into the return of the Tech21 TM60, i'm getting pretty good tones , but still need a lot of tweakings to be done, the clean sounds are good right off but the drives seems to have a blanket on most of it..ant the quirks of this POD HD 300/400 is you can't, CANNOT turn off the cab sim!

subversion.sg said...

he he... i'm still excluded from this club. when i play i close the room door, whatever's heard outside is secondary impact.

that's the hint altogether bro- you can't switch the cab emulation off, meaning: it's better paired with monitors than amps :-)

Hey sub I'm guessing ur marshall cab is a 4*12 right since ur blackheart is a 1*12??

the 1960 is indeed a 4x12 :-)
