Swing: MG-103

Mike (SV) told me Swing's M-103 is one of his in-store favourites due to its simplicity. I was at SVG yesterday to give this guitar another go & it's simply good (no pun intended). The instrument was well set up which contributed a lot to playability & if you like what Ibanez has to offer in terms of neck profile, the M-103 will have something for your pleasure. However, I'm of the opinion that the manufacturer had the right pair of humbuckers in there, Swing's own Dual Max pickups did well to accentuate saturated distortion for some good definition but they are not to be well-liked in clean mode. Nevertheless, it's not the reason to be ignoring this good player. The M-103 is available in red & white finishes as well.

List: $450 (10% discount still applicable @ SVG sale)

hey sub the maple top is a laminate right??

subversion.sg said...

if you referring to this guitar- no maple top for this one :-)

if you are referring to the MG-505; in this price bracket, we should assume it's a laminate top...

i was actually referring to the MG505 haha but think it was kinda too much to expect an actual maple cap on it...no harm dreaming right hehehe

a laminate top is indeed made from a real piece of maple, just not substantial enough to contribute to tone. unless it's a photo top :-)

o.O i thought photo tops were the same as laminates??

photo tops, or verneersm are usually extremely thin pieces of figured wood if you're lucky, or just paper if you're not.

if it's the same, then it won't be referred to as 'photo' :-)

reuel said...

woah then photo does even less to tone than the laminate top right hahaha

the same actually- they both have negligible contributions to tone, he he... :-)

how does the locking tuners work? Can i still tune down and use alternate tunings after installing locking tuners?

subversion.sg said...

locking tuners are simply tuners which grip your strings in place at the machine heads. thereafter, your tuners function as per normal usage :-)

If you had to choose between the mg-101, 103 & 505, which would you buy?

that's subjective bro... it's a PERSONAL assessment. since i don't whammy these days & prefer a fixed bridge, i'd choose the 103...
