Recommendations: Les Paul-alike guitars

Epiphone, Burny, Edwards, Tokai & PRS aside, which other LP-like guitars:
  • won't break our piggy?
  • worth the purchase?
My firm recommendation to everyone looking for something impressive, feel & tone-wise, would be the Rally GL models. The dimensions of these guitars are very convincing, same goes for the feel. The default pickups prove to be the real surprise because they sound above-average; do listen to what the neck humbucker has to offer. Do remember that Rally used to be the licensed maker of Epiphone guitars. Highly recommended.

The Ibanez ART series are recent inclusion in the market here. The single cutaway design isn't too LP precise, especially the rather slim & wide neck. Nevertheless, the ones sporting passive humbuckers do generate some pleasant, working tones.

LTD's EC-50, like its other Series 50 siblings are great starter units, worth every cent of the asking price. However, the guitar only apes the LP outline, the body's slim depth would hint at the tones one can expect from this model. Please do not go looking for immaculate LP-type, deep voicings here.

Grassroots are the budget makes of ESP's Edwards range of guitars. They are impressive nevertheless but not as immaculate sounding as the real deal.

Check out Agile's AL models. Very inexpensive but still excellent quality. They even make a baritone version.

I would be remiss to not also mention Parker PM60 and PM20s. Not going to be mistaken for a LP any time soon, and the PM60's are expensive but, damn, those are nice playing and sounding guitars.

yo dear subbie!

Was wondering, how would u rate, or rather compare a rally with an Edwards? in terms of tone wise. i believe rally has good QC. but am not sure bout its tone. a looking for a backup guitar and tot maybe i can buy a rally and mod. Wat ya think? =]

the Rally GL series, despite being an affordable alternative, requires very little mods to appease the owners. the Edwards sit above the GL bec it includes a more well know sets of hardware/ electronics (GOTOH) & pickups (Seymour Duncan).

testing is a must... at least to me :-)

Which of the copies woud reccommend as the basis of a project guitar? I intend to get a Dimarzio PAF and a Superdistorion and install them in a Les Paul body, with maybe some mods.

hmm.. if it's subject to countless mods, the feel would be priority. if you wish for a very close call, the Edwards/ Grassroots brand name should be checked out.

if it's not a big deal in terms of this likeness, the Rally is a fantastic buy :-)

I really really need some advice between the Rally GL 400 and Epiphone LP Custom. They both seem so alike. Apart from price, any advice or reviews?

any considerations for the UNO Standard?

I read/heard that the dimensions of UNO make for a different/brighter tone? The Gibson would be my first choice, but since the price is wayyy off... Its either the Rally or Epiphone. :D

not all UNOs stray from the Les Paul vibe, if there is one which is not adhering much to this, it would be the Standard which is discontinued. the D-classic is a good consideration.
