LTD's X-Tone acoustic- just tried one recently, it's the AC-10 model. I wouldn't say it's up there & chiming with Martin, Taylor, et al but they sound above average. Some acoustics sound dead unplugged, they are only worthy after plugging in, but the AC-10 fared well in both worlds.

Hey sub! I noticed that your recommendations tend to be those 'above average' guitars, which of course makes lotsa sense. Could you share about guitars that you really didn't like too, be it QC, or playability or stuff like that, in a future post? Would be interesting...
those sub-standard guitars won't make it to the stores in the first place :-) but i do make it a point to state precautions when it comes to sub-standard items...
hey sub i think what he was referring to was lesser known brands which tend to churn out more lemons than good guitars. eg the lemons aria used to churn out almost all the time.
even for lesser-known brands, they are all OK. these days, distributors are only agreeable to carry products which are meeting expectations. there are sufficient trade shows to evaluate these gear before accepting them for distribution.
i beg to differ. there are still some stores (not naming any) who carry some guitars with scars of poor handling. but not sure when ur these days start cos last i went into a guitar shop to really test guitars was abt a year ago.
poor handling is the most likely product of the store people themselves + it may be the indifferent treatment of people trying them as well. manufacturers won't, in their right mind today, ship duds out. at the receiving end, we are empowered to make these sorry products known to the rest of the world. it hurts the business goodwill. if we can't get back at them, we can hurt them in so many other ways. not starting a smear campaign here :-o

but i would say that in the 80s, there were lemons sold off the shelves. i think your Aria reference was that experience in a nut shell- some of those guitars were really unplayable, not only that- they are beyond repair as well. but recently Aria had some good stuff; good & cheap i must say :-)
well the recent aria i let go had really bad frets. like totally all wrong with so many dead notes. had to do plenty of fret filing. problem was there were totally no dead notes before the guy at the shop set it up. and that was only abt a year back lol.
that's a stark contrast to what's on offer lately. i recently bought an ARIA which only got better after i set it up. however, i can't speak for the consistency of production here, i've only tried 2 units of that same model which are issues-free.
i guess in the end its up to us to make sure what we buy aint a lemon. but is there a way to make sure the guitar is not a lemon even after setup??
