But be informed that due to the additional 2 frets in the current generation of S-series guitars, the pickup mounting ring was snipped at the factory to make way for the extension. The picture above also shows the neck extension which aligns itself with the cavity wall so we know that it's not an overhanging fretboard extension instead.

Snipped ring
To the unsuspecting guitar wielder, the Ibanez S-series guitars saw a simple, 2 fret addition- there's nothing to it, yes?

haha.. ibanez are always innovative in their design. bad part is, cant simply change hardware
some mounting rings are plastic so snipping these ourselves shouldn't be a problem :-)
we also need to note that shifting the pickup away would upset the harmonics order for that particular pickup.
this is why, the Joe Satriani model (JS2400), upon receiving 2 more frets (from 22 to 24), saw a single coil sized humbucker being utilized because Mr. Satriani does not wish to upset the harmonics for that pickup position. if we look closely, the new single coil sized humbucker is about the same position as the full-sized humbucker in the JS1200 :-)
precise positioning is everything for some of us who rely on pinch/ artificial harmonics :-)
talking about pickup placement, it can also be placed UNDER the bridge, he he...
heres some info i guess..

nice diagrams.. good for those who like diy ang projects guitars.. am currently converting my s/s/h guitar to a h/h so neck pup placement should be learned b4 routing..
its doesnt have shielding paint for the pup cavities?
Why youd need the cavity paint?
