Guitar set up: Simple instructions (maybe) Part 4

Proceed to check your guitar's action by measuring how high the individual strings are at the 14th fret. My highest E string is 1.5mm off the 14th fret crown. This gives me a very low action; the shredder's preference, so to speak. This recommended action measurement is more suitable for guitar necks with a flatter profile such as Ibanez, Jackson, ESP & the likes. My low E string is 2.0mm at the same fret position.

Action preference is very much personal. How low or high your action should be, depends on your playing style & how you feel when you play your guitar. Whatever it is, at the end of this exercise, ensure each string action contributes to an arched overall setting as depicted above simply because each of your fret is not as straight as you'd think it is, across the fretboard. If you observe a flat setting, you'd hear string buzzing at some fret positions & this would deceive you into thinking your neck is still warped or there are other fret anomalies which should be addressed.

...to be continued (final installment).

we keep forgetting frets aren't straight to begin with. i was guilty of this when i started messing with action settings myself until further reading, of course... this is why there are radius gauges sold out there :-)

hey sub. if the guitar has a super straight neck ie. the string is touching all the frets when a fret the 1st and last frets, but there are plenty of dead notes even after turning the thrust rod anti clockwise, then what is wrong with the neck?? :(

i'm guessing the dead notes manifest during bends, yes? then there's nothing wrong with the neck, the frets need looking into- they are not leveled; most probably worn out.

ermm no. they appear when i just fret the note. then when i raised the action abit they disappear. had this problem before with my previous guitar(mike solved it for me, not sure how though)

but now there's a problem. there are a few frets that have some funny sound when played. its like a super charged tele twang sound with extreme amounts of buzz -.-

it still sounds like you are facing with uneven frets- may be due to wear or improper installation (at the factory).
