Side cancelling

You've seen single-coil type humbuckers & the stacked versions. Curtis Novak pickups offer this version as seen above (TEL-HC)- magnets are located adjacent to each other but the objective is the same; hum canceling. Why is this rather favourable? This arrangement means the pickup maintains the normal depth, as opposed to the stacked magnets version. Some of our guitar cavities sport a limited depth clearance to accommodate stacked humbuckers.
