Gibson: ES335-S

Gibson's 'new' ES model is actually a solid body model; ES335-S. If it's a solid body model, then what's the point? The whole objective of getting an ES is really to embrace the non-solid nature of the body construction, that's what I believe.

I actually have an original 335-S made in 1980, in Gibson's original factory in Kalamazoo. The original series was called Gibson Firebrand and the 335-S was one of its models.

I saw it in Real Guitars in San Francisco earlier this year and bought it after a few strums. Fantastic little rocker and most unique, too. I'm a big fan of solid bodies, I suppose Gibson was/is targeting people who wouldn't normally buy a hollow body but were interested in the shape of the original piece.

Not too sure how this reissue would pan out, it's not a shape most Gibson fans would instantly take to. Like the recently reissued Gibson Nighthawk, I suppose Gibson is really going beyond the usual suspects in its product line. But I took their bait when I picked up the said reissued Nighhthawk last month. And I love it! Happy New Year, all!

I had a Les Paul standard for 12 yrs. As I can see, this 335s has better upper fret access and I suspect that the balance also will be better. I must confess I prefer this one over the Les Paul! Not to mention the nice and simple fretboard dots, I always hated those blocks, either trapezoidal or rectangular !
Happy new year everybody !
