is tesla good? compare to seymour duncan,EMG,DiMarzio ?

my approach to pickups is that i don't deem some brands to be 'better' than others. i acknowledge their specialization for certain voicings & their chemistry with wood types.

TESLAs, from my personal encounters, are the least troublesome when it comes to guitar-pickup brand name matching. they sound attractive in whatever guitars they reside in but the amp & effects contribute to the tonal performances as well :-)

tell me your guitar model, my friend & i'll do my best to match. hopefully you'll be quick to catch the models i mention because once sold, no fresh units would be brought in to SV Guitars- it's a clearance SALE :-)

how about your distortion set-up; how intense do you like yours to be?

Anonymous said...

umm. i'm wan a sound around like Phat Cat SPH90-1(seymour duncan). lol sry i donno whats intense :X

subversion.sg said...

intense as in 'heavy'... but it's ok, we have different wants/needs. TESLA's Opus II is a direct competition to the Phat Cat, you can check them out :-)

Hi sub, is this the shop at the basement of excelsior hotel?

subversion.sg said...

no bro- SV Guitars is located at Peninsula Hotel basement, where Davis is, same level :-) click the link on the left column to get their exact address.

bro Ijau: i consider good amps more crucial than good pickups :-)

I have a TGM strat my daughter use to play with. Will checkout some Tesla single coils since its on sale.

Wow thats a discount at the right time, thinking of upgrading my trebly pups on my Jack and danny les paul. What do you suggest? I did some homework and i thought the VR2 will give the thick kind of tone, think Gary Moore.

subversion.sg said...

i've heard the VR-II in action, it can definitely give you that Gary Moore-esque wooliness. it's good that you consider a covered humbucker, that's the key to what you wish for :-)

subversion.sg said...

however, keep in mind that much of Gary Moore's tone candy received significant input from his Marshall Blues Breaker amp :-)

Sub Bro, will the Tesla VR-1 sounds good with a '96 Mexican Fender Strat? I think the body wood is poplar. Hoping to get a set from the sales. Thanks.

Thanks sub! Think the 15% made my day, its just about 30 bucks more if i were to ship in from Guitar Fetish. Finalized my decision :D

'96 Fender Strat- maple or rosewood fretboard?

Anonymous said...

Its maple fretboard. Or should I go for the Tonerider Surfari. I'm hoping to play some surf style on my strat.

in the TESLA offering, the Plasma 1 should do the trick.

my preferred pickup for lots of single coil whack but not in the vintage vein- Duncan's Quarter Pound :-)

I just got my Yamaha strat copy (SSH)installed with Plasma 1 for the neck, middle and Plasma 3 on the bridge. The sound is somehow better then what I have expected.

many of us would somehow place the TESLA below expectations in comparison to other replacement brand names. this is a by-product of unfamiliarity since we are accustomed to the DiMarzios/Duncans/EMGs out there. the TESLAs are much overlooked IMO.

Hi bro sorry to dig up, What offering does tesla has that has or can get close too the Slash AP2 type sound?

subversion.sg said...

hi bro :-)

we can't quite get a Slash-esque tone from the TESLA range due to the magnets in use- Alnico 5/ Ceramic. Slash thrives on pickups with mild magnets- an Alnico 2. so the closet offering here would be TESLA's VR-60.
